Why I Made This Game
Family game night was never just a pastime in our house. It was the one hour where the day finally loosened its grip—where the table became a small, safe world, and everyone had a seat in it. Snacks appeared like tradition. Someone argued over the rules with total confidence and questionable accuracy. Someone else laughed so hard they couldn’t breathe. And even when the mood in the room had been heavy, something about shuffling cards, rolling dice, and taking turns made it easier to be together.
I kept wishing for a game that could hold all of us at once—something with real strategy for the people who want to think three moves ahead, but simple enough that anyone could jump in and feel smart right away. A game where you didn’t need a lecture or a long attention span to get started. You could learn it by playing, get your first win from a clever choice, and then realize there were deeper layers waiting when you were ready.
That balance became the goal: easy entry, deep decisions. Constant engagement. No long stretches where someone checks out, staring at their phone while waiting for their turn to matter again. Instead, a steady rise of choices that keep pulling you back in—should you risk it, play it safe, block someone, chase the bigger payoff? And with each round, the tension mounts in the best way: not mean or stressful, but that bright, focused suspense where everyone’s leaning forward, watching the table, reading faces—grinning because the next move could change everything. Then that one player—always the most down on their luck—starts lining up their moment: preparing to be the first to snag a pistol when the final news token drops, ready to make the whole table pay attention, determined to turn their fortune around one way or another.
That’s what I wanted to build—something we all could enjoy, together, every time we opened the box, with each game unveiling a surprise layout. A game that keeps the laughter close, the rivalry (mostly) friendly, and the story of the night alive right up until the very last turn.
The Journey Back
Eighteen years ago, I stepped away from my career as a mental health specialist to focus on raising my family and supporting my wife in her career. At the time, it felt like a meaningful investment in the future we were building together, and I gave myself fully to that role. Through all the wonderful times and unexpected challenges, I will always be grateful for the years we shared as a family.
Life doesn’t always unfold as we expect. After many years of marriage, I found myself navigating a major transition and the reality that I would need to completely rebuild independently. By my mid-forties, after a long time away from the workforce, I was starting again—without a traditional career path and in the midst of a rapidly changing world.
Rather than dwell on what I couldn’t control, I chose to focus on what I could create. The rise of new tools, including AI, offered a way to adapt and rethink what work could look like. By combining those tools with my own creativity, I began turning a period of uncertainty into an opportunity to build something new. Whatever the outcome, I’m grateful for the chance to learn, experiment, and work toward a more stable future for myself and my family.
Inspired by Family
As a full-time parent to two daughters, my daily life is shaped by their needs. One of my daughters lives with me full-time and benefits from a high level of structure, consistency, and presence, including an adjusted school schedule and transportation support from me. This made it clear that a conventional job wasn’t the right fit—I needed to create something more flexible.
That spark came from my youngest daughter, who first imagined this game as part of a fourth-grade school assignment. With encouragement from my oldest daughter as it grew into something tangible, I leaned into the one resource I still had in abundance: ideas. Drawing on years of family craft projects and memories of game nights together, I worked to bring the concept from imagination to completion.
I’m deeply grateful to my family and a small circle of friends for their steady encouragement. Through countless rounds of playtesting and thoughtful conversations about rules and accessibility, they offered far more than feedback—they helped sustain the momentum and belief needed to see this project through.

I want to be transparent about my process. Lacking the capital to hire a full team or professional artists, I relied on AI to assist me at various stages of development, particularly in the graphics department. Without these tools, this project would likely have remained a dream. AI didn’t replace a team for me—it became a bridge, offering a way forward when I had no other means to climb.
While AI helped bring this passion project to life, my heart is firmly rooted in human collaboration. My hope is that this endeavor becomes sustainable enough that I can redesign and expand this game alongside professional human artists, invest directly in the creative community I deeply respect, and bring my many other game ideas to life through collaboration with others.
